Syria
Iraq's neighbor is overwhelmed by refugees — often the most vulnerable to begin with — fleeing the violence in their home country.
Mercy Corps was one of the first global relief-and-development agencies to receive permission from the Government of Syria to open an office inside the country to respond to the needs of Iraqi refugees. Initially we provided emergency food assistance and hygiene kits to needy families. Today our programme has evolved to provide computer training programmes for refugees and at-risk Syrian youth.
While Mercy Corps aims to increase the well-being of refugees and vulnerable Syrians, our programmes also aim to increase cooperation between Syria and the international community, particularly the United States.
